The Best Water Filters for Apartments and Renters

Five systems that clean your water without drilling, without permanent plumbing, and without starting a fight with your landlord. Tested across three rentals in two cities.

The one-line answer

For most renters, the AquaTru Countertop is the right filter. It removes PFAS to non-detect, plugs into any outlet, takes zero permanent plumbing, and moves with you in a single box.

The three rules of rental filtration

Landlords don't care about your water. That's our starting assumption. Anything we recommend here has to obey three rules:

That disqualifies most traditional under-sink systems. What's left splits into two families: countertop RO units and faucet-mount / quick-connect inline filters.

What we tested for

Same lab protocol as our under-sink review: PFAS panel, lead and arsenic, chlorine and chloramine, microplastics. But with two rental-specific metrics added:

AquaTru Classic Countertop

01 · EDITOR'S PICK

AquaTru Classic Countertop RO

4-stage RO · plug-in · ~1 cubic foot

The category-defining rental filter. Four-stage reverse osmosis in a unit that sits on your counter like a small coffee maker. Non-detect on all PFAS in our panel, including short-chain replacements. Plugs into any standard outlet. When you move, it takes five minutes to disassemble and goes in its original box.

Best for Any renter who wants uncompromised water quality. First-time filter buyers. Anyone who expects to move within the next few years.

What we liked

  • Non-detect PFAS across the board
  • No plumbing work ever
  • Certified by NSF to 58, 42, 53, 401, P473

Trade-offs

  • Takes real counter space
  • Wastewater collects in a separate tank
  • Fill-tank design means you pour, not tap
Frizzlife WB99 Countertop

02 · BEST TAP-CONNECTED

Frizzlife SK99 Countertop RO

Tankless countertop RO · tap diverter install

Smaller counter footprint than AquaTru, and it pulls from your existing faucet via a snap-on diverter that uninstalls without tools. Non-detect PFOA and PFOS; short-chain PFAS came in low but not zero. The right pick if your counter space is the binding constraint.

Best for Small-kitchen renters who want RO-grade filtration but can't spare a foot of counter. Apartments where the faucet is close to an outlet.

What we liked

  • Smaller footprint than AquaTru
  • Tankless — no holding water
  • Diverter installs in under 2 minutes

Trade-offs

  • Short-chain PFAS: low, not zero
  • Requires outlet near sink
  • Diverter fit varies by faucet

Big Berkey

03 · BEST OFF-GRID / NO-ELECTRICITY

Big Berkey with Black Filters

Gravity-fed countertop · no power, no plumbing

If you don't want another thing plugged in — or you live somewhere with unreliable power — gravity filtration is the answer. Fill the top chamber, water drips through the filter elements into the bottom chamber, you pour from the spigot. Our lab data shows strong chlorine and heavy-metal reduction, with partial PFAS removal. Not RO-grade on PFAS, but meaningfully better than tap.

Best for Renters in areas with unreliable power, off-grid cabins, travel use, or anyone who wants a filter that keeps working when the grid doesn't.

What we liked

  • Zero power, zero plumbing
  • Filter elements last ~6,000 gallons
  • Travel / emergency use

Trade-offs

  • PFAS removal partial, not total
  • Stainless chamber is tall — check cabinet clearance
  • Manual fill
Waterdrop A1 Countertop

04 · BEST INSTANT-HOT

Waterdrop A1 Countertop

Countertop RO with instant-heat · plug-in

The novelty that turned out to be useful: an RO countertop that also gives you 212°F water on demand. No kettle. Non-detect on PFOA / PFOS, low on short-chain. If you drink a lot of tea or use instant oatmeal, this is the filter that's going to earn its counter space.

Best for Tea drinkers, coffee-with-pour-over ritualists, anyone who wants to free up a kettle-sized piece of counter by consolidating filter + hot water.

What we liked

  • Instant hot water is genuinely nice
  • Tankless RO
  • Modern UI, intuitive

Trade-offs

  • Short-chain PFAS not non-detect
  • Priciest countertop we tested
  • Footprint creeps over 1.5 cubic feet
PUR Plus Faucet Mount

05 · BUDGET PICK

PUR Plus Faucet Mount

Faucet-mount activated carbon · clamp-on install

The only filter on this list under $50. It screws onto your existing faucet in sixty seconds. Good chlorine and lead reduction; partial PFOA / PFOS reduction; will not touch short-chain PFAS. If your tap-water concerns are chlorine taste and lead from older pipes, this solves them cheaply. If PFAS is the concern, move up the list.

Best for Tight-budget renters whose main concerns are chlorine taste and lead. Short-term leases where a $200+ countertop can't amortize.

What we liked

  • Cheapest way to cut chlorine and lead
  • Truly 60-second install
  • No power, no drain, no counter space

Trade-offs

  • Partial on PFOA/PFOS, zero on short-chain
  • Cartridges short-lived
  • Doesn't fit pull-down faucets

How to choose

Start with your water-quality concern. If it's PFAS, you want RO — and that means a countertop RO unit (AquaTru, Frizzlife, Waterdrop). If it's chlorine and taste, a faucet-mount is enough. If you want redundancy and off-grid reliability, Berkey.

Then check your constraints: do you have an outlet near the sink? Do you have twelve inches of counter space? Is cabinet clearance a problem? Every filter on this list passes at least two of those tests; none passes all four.

Why these five made the list

What every renter-friendly filter had to do.

01

Installs without drilling

No permanent plumbing changes, no holes in countertops, no landlord approval required. If it can't be uninstalled in under 10 minutes, it didn't qualify.

02

Fits in a moving box

Moves with you between apartments. Bulky systems that require reinstallation fees or re-priming got penalized or cut.

03

Verified contaminant reduction

NSF 42 minimum; NSF 53 for anything marketed as removing health contaminants. Lab data — not just claims — required for PFAS-reduction picks.

04

Replacement cartridges available at retail

If cartridges are only available from the manufacturer on backorder, the system is a liability. Every pick has cartridges available on Amazon within 48 hours.

The bottom line

For most renters, the answer is AquaTru.

No drilling, no landlord conversation, non-detect on every PFAS compound we tested. It's the filter we'd hand to a friend moving into their first apartment. If you need a smaller footprint, the Frizzlife SK99 is the alternative.

Frequently asked

Will my landlord care?
Not if you pick from this list. None of these require drilling, soldering, or modifications to supply lines. A diverter-style countertop (Frizzlife, Waterdrop A1) attaches to your faucet aerator threads — the same threads your kitchen sprayer uses. Remove in a minute, hand them the keys.
What about Brita or ZeroWater pitchers?
Pitchers have a place — they're cheap and fix chlorine taste — but they don't reliably remove PFAS. If that's your concern, skip pitchers. If it's not, ZeroWater outperforms Brita on heavy-metal reduction in our testing.
Can I take these with me when I move?
Yes, that's the entire point. All five fit in a single box. Keep the original packaging.
Do countertop RO units work with well water?
Sort of — they'll filter the water, but RO membranes clog fast on iron and sediment. If you're on a well, add a whole-house sediment pre-filter or expect to replace cartridges monthly.
