Curated List · Updated monthly

My Top Clean-Home Essentials

Fourteen products I actually use in my own home, grouped by category. No filler, no affiliate-spray — if it's on this list, it's earned its spot through at least six months of real use.

How this list gets made

Every product here has been in my home for at least six months and survived an ongoing use test. Products get dropped when something better shows up or when long-term use reveals a flaw. Reviewed quarterly — last review April 2026.

Kitchen & drinking water

Waterdrop G3P800

DRINKING WATER

Waterdrop G3P800 Under-Sink RO

What I use every day · installed 14 months

If I could only keep one thing on this list, it would be this. Non-detect PFAS, full pressure at the tap, and I don't think about it for six months at a stretch. The filter-change reminder is accurate.

Caraway Cookware

COOKWARE

Caraway Ceramic Non-Stick Set

PFOA- and PTFE-free · in use 2 years

The non-stick question is really a PFAS question. Caraway's ceramic coating has held up through two years of daily use — no chipping, no metal-utensil trauma, no mystery vapors when preheated. Not indestructible; treat like nice cookware.

Stasher Bags

FOOD STORAGE

Stasher Silicone Storage Bags

Reusable · replaces Ziplocs · dishwasher-safe

The only food-storage swap that actually stuck. Platinum silicone, no plastic, no plasticizers. Seal holds liquid. Freezer and dishwasher both work. I own six and we don't buy zip-top plastic bags anymore.

Indoor air

IQAir HealthPro Plus

BEDROOM AIR

IQAir HealthPro Plus

HyperHEPA + gas-phase · in use 3 years

Expensive. Worth it. Genuine HyperHEPA filtration down to 0.003 μm and a separate V5-Cell for VOCs / formaldehyde / ozone. Drops PM2.5 from wildfire-season 80+ to under 5 within 20 minutes in a bedroom. The filters last years, not months.

Coway Airmega 400

LIVING-ROOM AIR

Coway Airmega 400

True HEPA · best-value large-room purifier

The value pick. Not as aggressive as the IQAir on gases, but it handles particulates excellently and costs a third as much. If I were furnishing a new home today, I'd put the IQAir in the bedroom and a Coway everywhere else.

Awair Element

AIR MONITORING

Awair Element

Tracks PM2.5, CO₂, VOCs, humidity, temperature

You can't improve what you don't measure. The Element has been on my desk for two years; it's the cheapest way to catch cooking-related PM2.5 spikes, bedroom CO₂ buildup overnight, and VOC events from new furniture. Companion app graphs the trends.

Cleaning & laundry

Branch Basics Concentrate

ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER

Branch Basics Concentrate

Plant-based · one bottle replaces five · EWG Verified

A single concentrate you dilute to make all-purpose, bathroom, glass, and laundry cleaner. Scentless. No synthetic surfactants or phthalates. The economics vs. buying five separate products are genuinely good once you get past the starter-kit sticker shock.

Dropps Laundry Pods

LAUNDRY

Dropps Stain & Odor Pods

Plant-based enzymes · cardboard packaging

Cleans well, comes in cardboard, no plastic jug. No fragrance option is genuinely fragrance-free (not "clean cotton"). Works in cold water.

Who Gives A Crap TP

BATHROOM PAPER

Who Gives A Crap Recycled TP

100% recycled · no chlorine bleach · plastic-free packaging

Sounds silly on a list of "clean-home essentials," but conventional tissue production uses a lot of chlorine and plastic wrap, and the recycled version is functionally identical. Shipped in cardboard, wrapped in paper.

Bedroom & body

Avocado Green Mattress

MATTRESS

Avocado Green Mattress

Organic latex + wool + cotton · GOLS/GOTS certified

The only mattress I've owned where I don't lie there on the first night thinking about VOC off-gas. Firm. Heavy. Genuinely organic certification, not greenwashed. Six years in, shape is unchanged.

Coyuchi Organic Sheets

BEDDING

Coyuchi Organic Percale Sheets

GOTS-certified organic cotton

Cool to the touch, gets softer with every wash, no wrinkle-release chemistry. Priced like premium sheets because they are. Lasts years — mine are older than some of my furniture.

Necessaire Body Wash

BODY CARE

Nécessaire The Body Wash

Marine-safe surfactants · no phthalates, no sulfates

The body wash I'd recommend to anyone who reads ingredient labels. Clean formulation without being precious about it. Foams. Rinses. Doesn't leave a film.

What's not on this list (and why)

The goal is a short list of things that actually earn their keep. Products that didn't make it:

The absence of a product from this list isn't a condemnation — it just hasn't earned a permanent spot in a home I actually live in.

Why these 14 made the list

The rules every essential had to pass.

01

Six months minimum in use

Products don't get recommended until they've survived half a year of actual daily use. "I just got it and love it" doesn't count.

02

Ingredient-level verification

EWG, MADE SAFE, or equivalent third-party certification for anything that touches skin, food, or sleep. Self-declared "non-toxic" doesn't qualify.

03

Earns the price

If a cheaper product does 80% of the job, the premium option has to justify the remaining 20%. "Nicer packaging" is not justification.

04

Replaceable or repairable

We favor products designed for long service — replaceable parts, available refills, reasonable warranties. Throwaway products rarely make the list.
